A total of 5,502 students were enrolled at the Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology at the weekend, bringing the number of students at the college to more than 10,000.
Among the new students, 1,659 come from outside Shenzhen, 459 more than planned. The entry requirements were 483 points for students of arts and 447 points for students of sciences in the National College Entrance Examinations (NCEE), 38 points and 47 points higher than the requirements for associate colleges in Guangdong Province.
“This year we took in 38 percent more students than last year, and the entry requirements also increased,” said Liu Ying, vice president of the institute.
Among all the freshmen, there are two national award-winning students who entered the institute without taking NCEE, Liu said.
A total of 185 freshmen received scholarships for their outstanding performances. The total value of the scholarships was 311,000 yuan (US$49,172), 54,000 yuan more than last year.
A business incubation industrial park will be set up in the institute this year, providing facilities, financial support and services to students who want to start their own businesses.
Students who want to start businesses related to their majors will receive free offices and financial support of up to 50,000 yuan.
The institute will support 20 business projects every year, including five key projects and 15 regular projects.
