SHENZHEN Institute of Information Technology (SIIT) will pilot a Sino-German program to train Chinese students as mechanics specializing in luxury and high-end cars, institute officials said yesterday.

Initiated in 2011 by China’s Ministry of Education and a German government agency known as GIZ, the Sino-German Automotive Vocational Education Project aims not only to train Chinese students to repair and maintain luxury cars, but also to establish unified standards for the profession.

The project has won support from five top German carmakers: Audi, BMW, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen.

The five-year pilot program was first implemented in vocational engineering schools in Beijing; Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province; Changsha, capital of Hunan Province; Changchun, capital of Jilin Province; and Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province.

Ten of China’s 1,280 senior vocational colleges have been selected to form the second batch of schools piloting the program, and SIIT is the only one in Guangdong Province.

SIIT officially opened in September 2002, after the merger of Shenzhen Institute of Education, Shenzhen Industrial School and Shenzhen School of Finance and Economics. SIIT celebrated its 10th anniversary yesterday.

China’s auto market has seen exploding growth in the past several years, spawning huge demand for skilled workers who are needed to repair and maintain high-end cars.

With the mission of nurturing highly skilled technicians for Shenzhen’s information technology industry, SIIT currently consists of 14 teaching and research units and offers 38 IT-related majors.
