The engineering science discipline of the Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology (SZIIT) has muscled into the worlds top 1% for the first time, according to the latest Essential Science Indicator (ESI) issued by Clarivate Analytics.

The Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology is also the only vocational college on the Chinese mainland to make it on the list.

The ESI listing underscores the achievements of the institute's efforts to boost its scientific research and innovation capacity and shows a new major breakthrough in Shenzhen's vocational education, the Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology said in a statement.

Essential Science Indicator is an analytical tool that helps people identify top-performing research in Web of Science Core Collection. ESI surveys more than 11,000 journals from around the world to rank authors, institutions, countries and journals in 22 broad fields based on publication and citation performance. Data cover a rolling 10-year period and includes bimonthly updates to rankings and citation counts.

Statistics show that from 2018 to 2022, scholars from the Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology published a total of 779 papers in the field of engineering science, with citations totaling 9,066 times, averaging 11.64 times per paper and 28 highly cited.

Founded in April 2002 after the merger of three schools, the Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology is a national demonstration higher vocational institution, national demonstration software vocational institution and pilot school of the Sino-German Automotive Vocational Education Projectlaunched by Chinas Ministry of Education.

By making full use of Shenzhens role as Chinas tech hub, the Shenzhen Institute of Information Technology has teamed up with a number of local tech giants such as Huawei Technologies, Tencent Holdings, China Electronics Technology Group and Shenzhen Inovance Technology Co. The school-corporate cooperation has benefited the institute and boosted its academic capabilities.
