The first Harm Reduction Café in Echuca was at the Shamrock Hotel. It was really cold so small group warmed up by the fire and some people cancelled at the last minute. The people that come were from NSP and AOD work, a social worker and a naturopath. By total chance we were joined for a while by withdrawal Nurse who is also the NSP coordinator on holiday from a town in Gippsland over 400 kms away.
It can be difficult it can be for workers and clients to get the things they need in regional areas compared to the cities. The talk was mainly about NSP but we also went into pregnancy and drug use, newborns, supporting mums who have complex issues around drug use.
The night was a success and the people who attended all seemed to enjoy it. More importantly came away from it knowing the other workers better and chatting about how they can help each other out more.
It was agreed to do it 3 times a year In Echuca and to broaden the invite people from farther into New South Wales and to specifically invite people GPs and pharmacists.
